Everybody hated this part. Everybody, except perhaps for the captain, who wouldn't be able to feel anything, snug and comfy as he was in his pod.
He always imagined someone deep in the bowels of the ship closing a huge, old fashioned knife switch at the silent command from the captain. Yet in reality the jump activation process was nothing like that, of course. It ought to have been started like that though, the end result certainly warranted it.
The first indication to the crew that the jump sequence had been initiated, was the lockout of all non-essential equipment from the ship's power grid. A fraction of a second later the lights almost dimmed, as the capacitor dumped its energy into the reactors. The tokamaks screamed, as they were forced beyond all reason and engineering safety limits to fuse tons of atomized Helium, almost yet not quite not melting their delicate interior surfaces in the process. Somehow they still managed to multiply the energy from the capacitor by a thousandfold and more without instantly disintegrating, and it would be hours before the automatic repair systems had patched most of the abuse suffered by the ship's energy systems. Hours before they could jump again if events didn't go according to plan.
The plasma ablation emitters on one side of the hull began beaming titanic quantities of hard gamma rays toward a single, nearby point in space. The energy density of spacetime instantly jumped to infinity, and the delicate vacuum energy balance of spacetime was broken, further multiplying the available energy for what was to come. An utterly black softball sized event horizon formed around the tiny singularity, which began evaporating from the uneven Hawkings radiation. Anybody foolish enough to be outside the massive hull would have been instantly cooked to the bone.
The crew felt the slight lurch, as the whole ship stretched fractionally in the gravitational tidal forces from the singularity. He barely had time to think of the effect the energy field would have to anything or anybody near their point of arrival. Any moment now.
The Archon capital class ship Jumped.
